BREAKING NEWS – SHARK ATTACK AT MURIWAI

One person has died following an apparent shark attack at Muriwai Beach on Auckland’s west coast this afternoon.

Inspector Matt Sillars said emergency services were called to the popular surf beach about 1.24pm.

Police officers have shot the shark and the person’s body is now being recovered, he said.

“We don’t know whether the deceased was killed by the shark or was dead prior to the shark arriving,” he said.

Mr Sillars was not aware of anyone else being injured by the shark.

Police are taking control of the scene and have closed the beach.
