Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 24 April, 2015 – Los Angeles, California - Today the World Surf League announced their Big Wave Award nominees for the 2014/15 season. It was a year full of action at many of the most notorious big wave venues including Puerto Escondido, Mavericks and Jaws.

Shane Dorian was strategic in his assault on the big wave arena this year, and his efforts paid off big time as two of the five entries into the Billabong ‘Ride of the Year’ category were his. One being his crazy air drop to tube combo from a July XXL swell in Puerto Escondido. The other, a massive Jaws pit that came around mid winter. Of course, the final results won’t be unveiled until Friday, May 1st at the Grove, but in the meantime you can check out his entries and all the others right here. Congrats Shane!

Polar Bear Classic 2013 brought to by Mammoth Insulations

The Polar Bear Surf Classic was first held in 1981 as a fundraiser and an excuse to invite other clubs who could make the trek for a good party in the middle of winter – and although the surf is pretty unpredictable at that time of the year (it’s been more than often postponed through lack of surf) there has been some classic surf and spectacular surfing over the years.

The Polar Bear Classic is a competition like no other. As with the tradition of the contest, which is now in its 32nd year, it’s a very social weekend, bringing out surfers, friends, dogs and heaps of kids to enjoy a great weekend and the beautiful Sandy Bay Beach.
The great sponsorship support attracts the best surfers in the region and beyond. It was Mammoth Insulations inaugural involvement and quite a few of the staff of the company surfed in the comp as well as providing the prize money, beanies and tee shirts for everyone.

Mal Egginton (Contest Director)
