The last few months have been cruel for West Coast surfers, the usual summer offshores and clean lined up swells have gone walk about and being replaced by gale force onshores and macking swells week after week.
The National Surf Champs is currently being run at South Piha and this zone offers up a slightly sheltered arena for those to perform on, but where do you go for a warm up practice? Well you head up North and battle the high tide rip bowls and winds that seem to rip your skin off. Was it pretty? No! But it was a chance to get wet.
