Skullcandy Gash Gore WINNER Sept/Oct

SKULLCANDY GASH GORE 187

Surfing can be quite an intimidating sport to get into for a grom, first there’s the fear of the ocean to get over, then the fear of what lives in the ocean, cast aside those factors, and then while learning and getting pounded over and over as you attempt to master riding these waves, does in fact put a lot of wee-grommies off the sport. But for those that get through all that and are hooked on the buzz, inevitably there will come that time when they first get hurt and their world comes crashing down, and it starts all over again. For 8-Year-old Luca Tong of Gisborne, even a ‘Gash Gore’ winning injury wasn’t enough to keep him down.

Luca was competing in his first Gizzy boardriders comp in beautiful waves at Makorori’s Red Bus. He was surfing in a heat against his cousin and a few others and had just ridden a great wave, full stoke and smiles all round when disaster struck. His cousin had been pushed into a wave and couldn’t avoid Luca as he was paddling back out and got him square in the cheek! A few hours at ED and seven stitches later and Luca was a little broken but still as keen as ever, asking “Will I be able to surf at Grom Squad next Wednesday??”.

That’s the spirit Luca, that attitude will serve you well in your surfing years to come.

Luca, the epic crew at Skullcandy love your story, and have come to the party with their latest ‘Indy Truly Wireless earbuds’ which are water-resistant, and feature 16 hours of battery life, microphone, call, track and volume controls. Valued at $199. Check them out at  www.skullcandy.co.nz

If you just so happen to have a nasty incident, then send your photo and story to cory@nzsurfmag.co.nz and put Skullcandy Gash Gore in the subject field.
