Small Waves Stall Canterbury Champs Before Finals Day

A day of small surf stalled the action at the Go Pro Men’s Canterbury Surfing Championships held at North Beach, Christchurch yesterday (Sunday 24th April).

Despite surface conditions being perfect, the small waves of less than 0.5m greeted surfers on day two of the event.

The Under 17 and 14 Boys Divisions got the day underway but it wasn’t long before the conditions deteriorated and the action was put on hold until 3:00pm in the afternoon when further heats were contested including the Longboard Division.

Current New Zealand Longboard Series leader Zen Wallis (Piha) progressed through to the final posting a 12.0 point heat total to advance alongside Jack Hawke (Chch).  Hawke’s brother Henry advanced out of the second semifinal with a win over Hugh Ritchie (Chch).

Taranaki surfer Daniel Farr looked unstoppable again in the Under 17 Boys Division.  Despite measuring over 6ft tall, the young New Zealand representative still managed to find several clean waves and post a 15.0 point heat total.

Christchurch surfer Connor McClennan also looked impressive as he surfed to a 13.0 point heat total in the second semifinal.  The two surfers are joined by Elliot brown (Dun) and day one stand out Myka Black (Chch) in the final which will be contested today.

Black also advanced to the final of the Under 14 Boys Division finishing his semifinal in first place and advancing alongside surprise package Josh McCaffry (Chch).  In the second semifinal, it was Dunedin’s Ruben Peyroux who advanced alongside Oamaru surfer Maddy Barclay.

With a delay in proceedings yesterday, two arenas will be contested on the final day of the event which takes place 45 minutes north of Christchurch at Gore Bay today.  The premier Fussion Solutions Open Men’s Division will resume with the quarterfinals as well as the Mike Pero Real Estate Under 20 Boys Division.

The three-day event takes place from Saturday through until Monday (23rd – 25th April) along the Christchurch coastline and is sanctioned by both Surfing New Zealand and the South Island Surfing Association making for a high calibre field of surfers from around New Zealand.

The Go Pro Men’s Canterbury Championships also features senior divisions – Over 28 Men’s, Over 35 Men’s and Pier Lodge Over 45 Men’s plus the Longboard Division.

Pier Lodge is offering up a $250 prize for the best Father/Son result of the event with a number of Christchurch families expected vie for the title.
